Never exercise barefoot in athletic shoes, even for a 10-minute walk. Often, after a game or PE class, blisters appear on the feet. Besides ill-fitting shoes, inappropriate socks are a significant contributing factor. How do you choose the right sports socks? There are four principles:
Choose pure cotton. Pure cotton is soft, absorbent, and comfortable, especially for outdoor activities. The downside is that cotton fibers don't wick away moisture very well; they dry slowly. Avoid pure cotton socks during multi-day activities, especially in rainy summers.
Sports socks should be elastic. Elastic socks fit snugly and won't slip. Poorly elastic socks will clump together after washing, causing deformation and uneven wear, leading to chafing during exercise. When buying socks, check if the elastic fibers at the cuff (ribbed top) are broken. If they are, do not buy them.
Third, thicker sports socks are not necessarily better. The choice depends on your individual needs. Generally, people with sweaty feet should choose slightly thicker socks, and vice versa. For some sports, such as badminton, thick socks can affect foot comfort, so choose thinner ones. Also, if you have an ankle injury, you should wear thick socks to provide support and protection.
Fourth, wear specialized sports socks for specific sports. For certain sports, such as football, high-top socks are necessary to protect the calves; this should not be overlooked during exercise.
